Greener Mooikloof Ridge…Kick start with glass recycle bin!
Posted by ayumi on Wednesday Oct 8, 2008 Under Green ProjectAlong with the “Greener Mooikloof Ridge” project two glass recycle bins were installed (please read article on the project). In the first week after the installment, I and Kingdom discovered many irrelevant items such as paper bags, grass, cans, cigarettes etc. in the bins. We took the items away from the bins and put some notice boards to emphasize that these were meant for glass recycling. I am sure that we are going to clean up the bins until the residents of Mooikloof Ridge are well informed about the recycle project. It will take time for people to get used to sort litters since South Africa had not had strict rule and regulation on sorting litters. In fact all countries have been taking long time to succeed in recycling projects. In Japan I went through years of transition period for the nation to establish powerful litter sorting system.
Good news is that while we were cleaning up the bins many residents showed good interests in recycle project. We will keep on working on the advocacy and education with residents’ cooperation.
On 11th (this Saturday), Mooikloof Ridge Environmental Committee in conjunction with Rainbow Initiative is going to hold Recycling Poster Competition for the kids in the estate. This is a wonderful idea from the committee and a great occasion for children to understand the importance of recycling. We will report on the function soon!
Please note…the kids program was postponed to 8th November. Please read the next article for the report of the program.
